How long will my card take to be delivered?
If you order before 5PM your card will be dispatched the next working day. For example, if you order before 5PM on a Monday the card will be shipped on Tuesday. We use first-class post with Royal Mail.
Please Note: Overseas Shipping times can vary from country to country. Take Australia and the USA for example, it can take 3 to 10 days for your card to arrive at the border. However, Australia and the USA are large countries, and it depends on where the card’s final destination in that country is on how much extra time the local guys take to deliver your card. It has been known to be three weeks. In summary, if you’re ordering to a destination abroad, try to order a few weeks in advance if possible.
How long will my gift take to be delivered?
As most of our gifts are hand made or personalised, we ask for a 7 to 10 day lead time. We will endeavour to deliver items sooner where humanly possible.
What do we get for our money when we order a card?
You get the card you choose, plus the envelope, the braille message you provide, we also print the message on the back of the card, and we include a full braille description of any images or words that are on and in the card on a separate sheet of Braille paper. We send them in a large A4 envelope. The price you pay for the card also includes the first class post.
Can we get a braille description for gifts aswell as cards?
Yes, we can provide a brailled description for any gifts in either grade 1 or 2 braille.
Please note: Braille descriptions will be sent out separate from the gift so may arrive at a slightly different time.
Can we have print as well as the braille?
We print the message that you requested us to braille, we tend to put the print on the back of the card.
What part of the card do you braille?
We use a clear sheet of plastic to add the braille. We find it more durable than paper and because it is translucent, sighted readers of the card can see what is underneath, However, on some cards especially with grade 1 braille, we have to include a separate piece of card with the braille on one side and the print on the other.
How many words can we have?
This depends on the size of the card and if Grade 1 or Grade 2 is used. If Grade 1 is requested, then up to 38 words will fit on most cards, if grade 2 is selected then up to 45 words. If you need more than this, then we recommend you send a Braille letter as well.
What is braille?
Braille is a system of reading and writing using raised dots. It allows people who are blind to read with their fingers.
Combinations of dots make characters that represent letters and punctuation marks. Most of the shapes do not look like the print characters they portray.
Each braille character fits under a single fingertip, and the braille is read, left to right, one character at a time. The shape of the character is determined by which combination of the six-dot foundation character is used. There are 63 possible combinations.
Should we choose grade 1 or grade 2?
When in doubt choose grade 1 as a grade 2 reader can read grade 1, but this doesn’t necessarily work the other way around.
What is the difference between grade 1 and grade 2?
In grade 1 Braille, every letter of every word is spelt out exactly the same as in print. The problem with this though is that Braille takes up more space than print, so in grade 2 Braille, certain letters and even certain words can be shortened so that less space is used. For example, the word “and” can be represented by just one symbol, which only takes up one character, rather than three characters. Have a look at the example below to see a visual representation of the difference.
This example says “Happy Birthday Christine” in grade 1 on the first line and grade 2 on the second line. You will see that the name Christine is longer in grade 1. Grade 2 is shorter as there are three signs, one at the beginning, one in the middle and the last letter before the end of the name.
